As the days get shorter and the temperature begins to drop, our gardens face new challenges. Autumn and winter bring damp, wind, and frost — all of which can take their toll on your fencing if left unchecked. The good news? A little maintenance now goes a long way in protecting your fence for the months ahead.
Here are three simple but effective tips to keep your fence in top condition this season:
1. Check for Damage
Walk along your fence line and look for any signs of wear and tear — loose panels, cracked posts, or areas starting to rot. Addressing these early will prevent small issues turning into costly repairs once the weather worsens.
2. Clean and Protect
Dirt, moss, and algae thrive in damp conditions, so give your fence a good clean before winter sets in. Once dry, apply a quality wood preservative or stain to protect against moisture and frost damage. This not only extends the life of your fence but keeps it looking smart too.
3. Secure Posts and Panels
Autumn and winter winds can be relentless. Make sure your posts are solid in the ground and that panels are properly fixed in place. A sturdy fence will withstand storms far better than one with weak spots.
